What Is Modal?
You may have seen the word “modal” listed in the fiber content in clothing. Modal is a type of rayon fabric made from fibers of the beech tree. The term rayon applies to fabric/fiber made of the wood pulp from any tree. Modal uses only beechwood and is listed as a bio-based textile.
Modal fabric is very soft and is often found in underwear, bedding and towels. It is often blended with cotton, spandex or other fibers. It is cool to the touch and very absorbent. It takes and holds dye easily. Modal is less resistant to shrinkage than cotton and tends to pill less as a result of friction on the surface.
Although the Manufacturer’s recommends dry-clean only for Precious & Primitive scarves, 100% Modal Products can be washed in a safe manner.
If you decide to wash your Precious & Primitive Scarf, which all of our scarves are one hundred percent modal fabric, you should follow these guidelines for cotton. Modal can be washed in any water temperature – but cold water is safest.
You should avoid full strength chlorine bleach because it can not only bleach out the color it will weaken the fiber. Instead, opt for an oxygen-based bleach like OxiClean, Clorox 2, or Purex 2 Color Safe Bleach.
Modal, like cotton, most often needs a bit of ironing to look crisp. Use a cool iron. Extremely high temperatures when ironing can scorch the fibers. The scorching or yellowing occurs as the fibers begin to burn. Burned fibers cannot be revived.
